Tracie’s Treasures has always been passionate about teaching our children about the world we live in. Come rain or shine, we encourage growth and development through our passion for horticulture and outdoor learning. We apply these skills to the all of children’s activities, nurturing their development and understanding of the world holistically. This year, we’re looking to integrate the 17 Goals for Sustainability into our practices.
The United Nations 17 Goals for Sustainability
In 2015, all United Nations Member States adopted a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. Known as the 2030 Agenda, there are 17 agreed goals for sustainable development.
1 – No poverty: We gave some socks to a homeless man at ASDA to help keep him warm. Every time we see him we say hello and ask how he is.
2 – Zero hunger: We have visited a food bank and gifted some items such as clothing, tins and nappies
3 – Good health and well-being: We take part in a yoga or music and movement activity every day. We have been growing and tasting lots of different types of fruit and vegetables. Our favorites have been our potatoes, we love them boiled, dry roasted and mashed the best. We took a trip to the dentist and have been drinking lots of water and brushing our teeth after lunchtime.
We have rest / nap time outdoors and love eating our meals at the outside tables.
4 – Quality education: We provide quality learning opportunities for all staff, children, parents and our wider community within our setting.

5 – Gender equality: We have been lucky to have two female woodworkers helping to build our new garden classroom.
6 – Clean water and sanitation: We have three water butts (jack thinks this word is funny!) to provide our pond, fruit and vegetables natural water.
7 – Affordable and clean energy: Where ever possible we use solar power which includes lighting and water pumps. We ensure we only use the electricity when absolutely needed and keep our plug sockets off when not in use.
8 – Decent work and economic growth: We employ local workers to undergo necessary work.
9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure: The children have been fulling involved with the creation of our garden classroom. They have been fully involved in the planning, surveying, building and how to think critically about proposed soloutions for global challenges such as how to care for our wildlife while the work was undertaken. I am pleased to say their ideas worked and we have successfully moved all our bug houses and allocated new areas for the bug communities to thrive.
10 – Reduced inequalities: We provide activities, books, experiences and have discussions to support their learning and understanding that everyone is different and should be celebrated. they learn about fairness, inclusion and social justice all through the 17 sustainable goals.
11 – Sustainable cities and communities: We teach the children how to be inclusive, live, work and support our community. this helps to foster a sense of belonging. social responsibility and empathy.

13 – Climate action: Our whole ethos around our curriculum is ‘looking after our world’ now, tomorrow and for the future generations.
14 – Life below water: We have three ponds which we care for, the wildlife is attracted to them and this provides us with activities, provocations and teaches us about habitats and how to care for living things.
15 – Life on land: The children learn in our setting through observing soil, plants, animal species, focusing on ecosystems, habitats and the importance of biodiversity.
They also learn about threats like climate change and pollution, and how to take action to protect the environment through sustainable practices like conservation, recycling and responsibility.

17 – Partnerships for the goals: We teach the children about shared goals, working together, sharing and how to build strong relationships. They see how we work as a ‘Childminding Family’ to care, protect, support and create social success.
Incorporating the 17 Goals
At Tracie’s Treasures, we’re committed to teaching these goals to our children in a way they can understand and take part in a more sustainable future. Our children are our future so they should understand early the implications of the actions we make as mammals on this planet. Over the next twelve months we’ll be sharing articles, information and activities we’re involved in as a group, to show our commitment to the 17 Goals for Sustainability.
